source water classification
Safeguarding drinking water from the start.
Each year, surface water becomes more essential to our region’s source water supply. River water from the Alafia River and the Tampa Bypass Canal is a key component to our diverse supply system. Therefore, it’s critical these sources are protected from pollution and contamination and held to the highest quality standards.
That is why Tampa Bay Water has petitioned the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to upgrade segments of the Alafia River and Tampa Bypass Canal to Class I drinking water status. Currently, those water bodies are classified as Class III which protects fish, wildlife, and recreational use. An upgraded classification would add a layer of protection to the quality of our drinking water, making it healthier for us, our ecosystem and our economy.
A Class I designation will minimize the risk associated with future pollutant discharges and land use changes. Protecting water quality now protects the public’s substantial investment in alternative sources, ensures adequate and affordable drinking water for the region, protects the river ecosystems and reduces pollution to Tampa Bay.
